about

French pop-group Phat Dat launches its 2nd record - and first full-length LP : "Flowers". While their first venture "Culture Shock" was fuelled by tropical sounds and catchy grooves & motifs, "Flowers" features more sophisticated and subtle compositions, powerful melodies and a growing taste for improvisation and psychedelia.
The eponymous opening track "Flowers" is possibly the most straight-forward song, with its disco-esque beat and echoey arpeggios. The cold and repeated vocal line "The wind is getting warmer" resolves into an epic synth melody (sublimed by the song's amazing stop-motion clip, directed by the band's bassist Rémi Richarme). Other pop tunes like "The Mighty Sea" or "Holiday" wander into late 60's psych-pop adventures, while songs like "Nightlife Vision" or "Situations" (penned by drummer Luke Warmcop) define Phat Dat's clear intention to play around with all possible parameters of the pop format ; disjuncted, yet groovy rhythms and strangely poetic lyrics create a unique mood.
Phat Dat also treat us with a couple of instrumental compositions, "Snow Dropped" and "Striking Second First", where the free-flying sounds of Antonin Voyant's flute intertwine with Yippie's Quest's beautifully melancholic organ chords.
Phat Dat's "Flowers" encapsulates the joint efforts of Catapulte Records' in-house crew (Derya Yıldırım & Grup Şimşek, Guess What...) and Another Record's melodic tentacles (Satellite Jockey, François & The Atlas Mountains...), don't miss the band's live appearances (Transmusicales 2022, and more TBA)!
