“Unlock the door / and ask for more” - drummer/songwriter Damien Elcock a.k.a. Luke Warmcop (Phat Dat, Guess What, Orchestre du Montplaisant) has brewed a collection of poetic folk-tronic songs under the enigmatic name of “Memory Lane”, resulting in this eponymous first LP. Over the course of eleven intimate, yet groovy and lusciously produced post-pop compositions, Warmcop explores the human psyche, celebrates mother Nature, but also makes us move to irresistible beats and challenges our dancing skills.


The LP opens with a cinematic instrumental tune, ‘Striking Second First’, with its melodramatic theme that could well have been written by Algerian film composer Ahmed Malek, unraveling over a calm Carpenter-esque electronic beat. Whilst analog synths and clavinet lead most of the track, its hook is played on Warmcop’s second main instrument, the trumpet.

The slow and groovy ‘Turtle Dove’ – perhaps the cornerstone of the album – features Giorgio Poi – one of Italy’s most striking contemporary pop artists – who sings here in English, whilst Antonin Voyant (Phat Dat, Derya Yıldırım & Grup Şimşek) delivers a majestic guitar theme.

Songs like ‘Unlock The Door’, ‘Blue Sky Blue’ or ‘Génération de Merde’ feature an exciting combination of dancey beats – always with unexpected time signatures – and melodic patterns that connect in a similar manner to Moondog’s piano compositions.

While ‘The Pride Of The Peacock’ quotes a 18th Century poem by William Blake on a joyful Peruvian-inspired pentatonic melody, other songs talk of love, death, or more unusual topics such as ageing or philosophical considerations about the human condition, often linking those to greater forces, spiritual or natural. On the dreamy ‘Terrible Lizards’, Warmcop invites his long-time friend Coco Maria (now a renowned music selector and radio host) to sing “After the grand theft / all that’s left / is the softness of a pillow, the daily pain / The wind in the willow and the taste of rain”.


Memory Lane’s multiple musical and literary influences make it a peculiar and extraordinary album, which won’t fit in any box or genre. Yet it has soul, style and groove. And if you don’t quite get it at your first listening, give it a second play, as Memory Lane’s curious and magical universe deserves to grow in one’s heart.
